Heating is the second leading cause of home fires and the third leading cause of home fire deaths. During this holiday season, please be sure you are taking the proper precautions to avoid any home fire tragedies. Here are a few home heating tips for the protection and safety of your family and others:
– Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet from heating equipment and instill a strict 3 feet “kid-free zone” around open fires
– Never use the oven to heat your home
– Be sure heating equipment and chimneys are cleaned and inspected annually by a professional
– Turn off all portable heaters when you are done with them and before you go to bed
– Ensure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to prevent sparks from flying into and around the room
– Test smoke alarms at least once a month
